Back on October 26th 1940, the streets of Queensland’s capital city Brisbane, were shut down following a beer riot that lasted six-hours. With raucous crowds shouting ‘roll out the barrel – we want beer’!
The catalyst for the riot was due to the Government of the day, proposing that pubs be closed at 8pm (and on Sundays) to placate concerns by the Baptist Church and temperance organisations.
Although liquor licensing laws were already in place for pubs to close at 8pm, they were not strictly enforced. With some hotels staying open as late as 11pm, so they decided they would start cracking down on it with the force of the police.
Despite closing times still being debated today in Queensland’s parliament today, thankfully common sense has prevailed and most venues are able to stay open until midnight (and on Sundays).
Relaxed opening hours, combined with a great year round climate, has resulted in a massive increase over the past four to five years in the number of independent brewers opening opening their doors in the Sunshine state.
