16 Tun – Auckland
Located on Jellicoe Street in the Wynyard Quarter, 16 Tun is a loud and proud bastion of the craft beer revolution. The bar (named after the insulated brewing vessel used in the mashing and lautering stages of beer making) is the epitome of a ‘free house’. With 19 x regularly rotating taps of independent New Zealand craft beer, there’s bound to be a style to suit your pallet. If there’s nothing on tap that takes your fancy, there’s a great bottle selection with a range of styles, and breweries to choose from.
16 Tun also hosts regular beer appreciation and masterclass sessions. Teaching participants everything they need to know about the delicious, hoppy, malty beverage, as well as food pairing. The Ladies Only Masterclass, hosted by sisters Alex and Georgia Wieland who both work for 16 Tun, is a two-hour class that provides an informal beer education environment designed especially for women.
The String Theory branded interior of the bar features, long communal timber benches and booths, lashings of industrial steel and metal, all accented by deep golden copper, and soft lighting.
Foodwise you can expect tasty gastropub fare, which is grouped by half tun – starters, or full tun – mains. You’ll find mini Reuben sliders, fish and chips, ribs, Ruakaka paua fritters, Horopito chicken morsels, or Haloumi & Organic Quinoa if you’re so inclined. Every Wednesday 16 Tun’s Head Chef crafts a burger to match with one of their fresh tap beers. With the Beer and a Burger combo only setting you back $20.
