Named after the British Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, whose impressive naval triumph against the joint Franco-Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar was one of the most decisive victories in Naval history. Nelson is one of the sunniest cities in New Zealand, and it buzzes with creative energy, and a vast array of activities, both indoors and outdoors.
Any true craft beer nerd will know that at the centre of any good beer, lies high quality aromatic hops. So as luck would have it, the early English and German settlers to Nelson, found the region perfectly situated to grow the perfect crop for the bitter brew. Leading to Nelson now being the hop centre of New Zealand.
In the 120-kilometre stretch between Nelson and Onekaka in Golden Bay, there are 10 breweries, over 27 hop farms, and more than 15 craft beer bars, all within in a region with a population of just 100,000.
Oh did we also mention it’s home to the famed Nelson Sauvin hop? Famous for imparting its distinctive white-wine, crushed gooseberry, and fruity characteristics into new-world style beers such as American Pale Ale and IPA’s.
